Judges 6:12-13 When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.”
Gideon struggles here with how present the Lord is in his situation. This is one of the most difficult things to keep in mind and believe as we walk with God: that God has not abandoned us. The men do the right thing here and remember that God delivered them out of Egypt, yet their conclusion about abandonment is not founded in faith, but in despair and sorrow. These men feel abandoned, because war is at their doorstep and the odds are severely against them. In difficult times, take heart and remember that God is never far from you.
